With "Metallurgy," the Christoph Suttner Jazz Orchestra presents a symbiosis of modern big band composition, progressive metal, and fusion. Inspired by bands such as Meshuggah, Periphery, and Tool, the music is created with pure intention, seamlessly transitioning from fragile orchestral sounds to complex, distorted, and powerful riffs.
The debut album, set for release on March 7, 2025, via ATS Records, blends elements of modern jazz, progressive metal, and fusion in the original compositions by Christoph Suttner. The six tracks on the album – Axis Shift, Palindrom, Packsattel, Morphing, Chaotic Order, and Twisted Signals – explore themes of amalgamation, transformation, the tension between chaos and structure, as well as sonic distortion and modification. The title "Metallurgy" refers to the art of metalworking, symbolizing the transformation and melting of musical elements that are fused into a new "alloy."
One particularly unique track on the album is Packsattel. The idea for this piece came about during a drive on the A2, as Christoph Suttner traveled over the Packsattel toward his university in Klagenfurt. The sounds and impressions from the highway journey shaped the piece.
The album was recorded through the Sommerstudios program, a grant from SKE and ORF, at the ORF Radiokulturhaus, Studio 2. The album features musicians from the Viennese jazz scene, who bring the music to life with their powerful, precise, and at the same time, emotional playing.
